BACKGROUND: Andes virus (ANDV) is a zoonotic Orthohantavirus leading to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. Although most transmissions occur through environmental exposure to rodent faeces and urine, rare person-to-person transmission has been documented, mainly for close contacts. This study investigates the presence and infectivity of ANDV in body fluids from confirmed cases and the duration of viraemia. METHODS: In this prospective study, 131 participants with confirmed ANDV infection were enrolled in Chile in a prospective study between 2008 and 2022. Clinical samples (buffy coat, plasma, gingival crevicular fluid [GCF], saliva, nasopharyngeal swabs [NPS], and urine) were collected weekly for 3 weeks together with clinical and epidemiological data. Samples were categorised as acute or convalescent (up to and after 16 days following onset of symptoms). Infectivity of positive fluids was assessed after the culture of samples on Vero E6 cells and use of flow cytometry assays to determine the production of ANDV nucleoprotein. FINDINGS: ANDV RNA was detected in 100% of buffy coats during acute phase, declining to 95% by day 17, and to 93% between days 23-29. ANDV RNA in GCF and saliva decreased from 30% and 12%, respectively, during the acute phase, to 12% and 11% during the convalescent phase. Successful infectivity assays of RT-qPCR-positive fluids, including GCF, saliva, NPS, and urine, were observed in 18 (42%) of 43 samples obtained during the acute phase of infection. After re-culture, the capacity to infect Vero E6 cells was maintained in 16 (89%) of 18 samples. Severity was associated with the presence of ANDV RNA in one or more fluids besides blood (odds ratio 2·58 [95% CI 1·42-5·18]). INTERPRETATION: ANDV infection is a systemic and viraemic infection, that affects various organs. The presence of infectious particles in body fluids contributes to our understanding of potential mechanisms for person-to-person transmission, supporting the development of preventive strategies. Detection of ANDV RNA in additional fluids at hospital admission is a predictor of disease severity. FUNDING: None. The fabrication of atomically precise nanographanes is a largely unexplored frontier in carbon-sp3 nanomaterials, enabling potential applications in phononics, photonics and electronics. One strategy is the hydrogenation of prototypical nanographene monolayers and multilayers under vacuum conditions. Here, we study the interaction of atomic hydrogen, generated by a hydrogen source and hydrogen plasma, with hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene on gold using integrated time-of-flight mass spectrometry, scanning tunneling microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Density functional tight-binding molecular dynamics is employed to rationalize the conversion to sp3 carbon atoms. The resulting hydrogenation of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene molecules is demonstrated computationally and experimentally, and the potential for atomically precise hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene-derived nanodiamond fabrication is proposed.

The incorporation of nanopores into graphene nanostructures has been demonstrated as an efficient tool in tuning their band gaps and electronic structures. However, precisely embedding the uniform nanopores into graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) at the atomic level remains underdeveloped especially for in-solution synthesis due to the lack of efficient synthetic strategies. Herein we report the first case of solution-synthesized porous GNR (pGNR) with a fully conjugated backbone via the efficient Scholl reaction of tailor-made polyphenylene precursor (P1) bearing pre-installed hexagonal nanopores. The resultant pGNR features periodic subnanometer pores with a uniform diameter of 0.6 nm and an adjacent-pores-distance of 1.7 nm. To solidify our design strategy, two porous model compounds (1 a, 1 b) containing the same pore size as the shortcuts of pGNR, are successfully synthesized. The chemical structure and photophysical properties of pGNR are investigated by various spectroscopic analyses. Notably, the embedded periodic nanopores largely reduce the π-conjugation degree and alleviate the inter-ribbon π-π interactions, compared to the nonporous GNRs with similar widths, affording pGNR with a notably enlarged band gap and enhanced liquid-phase processability.

Graphene nanoribbon heterostructures and heterojunctions have attracted interest as next-generation molecular diodes with atomic precision. Their mass production via solution methods and prototypical device integration remains to be explored. Here, the bottom-up solution synthesis and characterization of liquid-phase-processable graphene nanoribbon heterostructures (GNRHs) are demonstrated. Joint photoresponsivity measurements and simulations provide evidence of the structurally defined heterostructure motif acting as a type-I heterojunction. Real-time, time-dependent density functional tight-binding simulations further reveal that the photocurrent polarity can be tuned at different excitation wavelengths. Our results introduce liquid-phase-processable, self-assembled heterojunctions for the development of nanoscale diode circuitry and adaptive hardware.

Pork-cat syndrome is a rare clinical syndrome that can cause lifethreatening reactions. Occuring in patients allergic to cat dander, it involves cross-reactivity between cat and pig serum albumin. Cat allergy usually precedes food allergies, suggesting primary sensitization to cat serum albumin. Since these proteins are thermolabile, the reaction tends to be more severe in undercooked meat. A 27-year-old woman with persistent moderate-to-severe rhinoconjunctivitis since childhood reported 2 immediate mucocutaneous reactions after eating small amounts of pork. Skin prick tests with commercial extracts showed sensitization to pork, and prick-to-prick tests confirmed sensitization to raw pork and raw beef. Specific IgE was positive for pork, and ISAC microarray also showed sensitization to Fel d 2. SDS-PAGE and IgE immunoblotting assays were performed with raw and cooked pork extract and detected in a 60 kDa band. In the immunoblotting-inhibition assays, cat serum albumin completely inhibited IgE binding to pork extract. The patient underwent 2 oral food challenges with well-cooked pork and beef, both causing an anaphylactic reaction. The patient's history and in-vivo and in-vitro tests led to a diagnosis of pork-cat syndrome with clinical cross-reactivity to another mammalian serum albumin. This case should stimulate oral food challenges with other well-cooked mammalian meats in patients with this syndrome to establish a tolerance threshold and avoid possible unexpected anaphylactic reactions.


A síndrome gato-porco é rara e ocorre em doentes alérgicos ao pêlo de gato, envolvendo reatividade cruzada entre as albuminas séricas (AS) de gato e de porco. Normalmente, a doença respiratória a pêlo de gato precede a alergia alimentar, sugerindo uma sensibilização primária à albumina sérica de gato. Uma vez que estas proteínas são termolábeis, as reações tendem a ser mais graves com carnes menos cozidas. Mulher de 27 anos com rinoconjuntivite persistente moderada a grave desde a infância que refere duas reações imediatas mucocutâneas após ingestão de pequenas quantidades de carne de porco. Os testes cutâneos por picada com extratos comerciais mostraram sensibilização à carne de porco e os testes prick-to-prick confirmaram sensibilização à carne de porco e de vaca cruas. A IgE específica (sIgE) foi positiva para carne de porco, e o ensaio ISAC mostrou sensibilização a Fel d 2. Foram realizados ensaios de immunoblotting SDS-PAGE IgE com extratos de carne de porco crua e cozidas que detectaram uma banda de 60 kDA. Nos ensaios de inibição por immunoblotting a albumina sérica de gato produziu uma inibição total da ligação da IgE ao extrato de carne de porco. A doente realizou duas provas de provocação oral com carne de porco e de vaca cozidas, ambas positivas com desenvolvimento de reação anafilática. A história clínica, os testes in-vivo e in-vitro levaram ao diagnóstico de síndrome gato-porco com reatividade cruzada clínica a outras albuminas séricas de mamíferos. A síndrome gato-porco é rara e pode causar reações fatais. Este caso frisa a importância da realização de provas de provocação oral com outras carnes de mamíferos bem cozidas em doentes com esta síndrome, de forma a estabelecer um limiar de tolerância e evitar possíveis reações anafiláticas inesperadas.

Eye-tracking research has allowed the characterisation of gaze behaviours in some racket sports (e.g., tennis, badminton), both in controlled laboratory settings and in real-world scenarios. However, there are no studies about visual patterns displayed by athletes in padel. METHOD: The aim of this exploratory case study was to address the visual behaviours of eight young expert padel athletes when playing match games on a padel court. Specifically, their gaze behaviours were examined with an in situ approach while returned trays/smashes, serves, and volleys were performed by their counterparts. Gaze patterns were registered with an SMI Eye Tracking Glasses 2 Wireless. RESULTS: The participants' gaze was mainly focused on the ball-flight trajectory and on the upper body of the opponents because they were the two visual locations with a larger number of fixations and longer fixation time. No differences were found in these variables for each type of visual location when the three return situations were compared, or independently of them. CONCLUSIONS: Padel players displayed a similar gaze behaviour during different representative return situations. This visual pattern was characterised by fixating at the ball and some opponents' upper kinematics (head, shoulders, trunk, and the region of arm-hand-racket) to perform real interceptive actions while playing against them on a padel court.

Selective C-H bond activation is one of the most challenging topics for organic reactions. The difficulties arise not only from the high C-H bond dissociation enthalpies but also the existence of multiple equivalent/quasi-equivalent reaction sites in organic molecules. Here, we successfully achieve the selective activation of four quasi-equivalent C-H bonds in a specially designed nitrogen-containing polycyclic hydrocarbon (N-PH). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the adsorption of N-PH on Ag(100) differentiates the activity of the four ortho C(sp3) atoms in the N-heterocycles into two groups, suggesting a selective dehydrogenation, which is demonstrated by sequential-annealing experiments of N-PH/Ag(100). Further annealing leads to the formation of N-doped graphene nanoribbons with partial corannulene motifs, realized by the C-H bond activation process. Our work provides a route of designing precursor molecules with ortho C(sp3) atom in an N-heterocycle to realize surface-induced selective dehydrogenation in quasi-equivalent sites.

Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) provide major promise for advances in cancer diagnostics, prognostics, and therapeutics, ascribed to their distinctive cargo reflective of pathophysiological status, active involvement in intercellular communication, as well as their ubiquity and stability in bodily fluids. As a result, the field of sEV research has expanded exponentially. Nevertheless, there is a lack of standardisation in methods for sEV isolation from cells grown in serum-containing media. The majority of researchers use serum-containing media for sEV harvest and employ ultracentrifugation as the primary isolation method. Ultracentrifugation is inefficient as it is devoid of the capacity to isolate high sEV yields without contamination of non-sEV materials or disruption of sEV integrity. We comprehensively evaluated a protocol using tangential flow filtration and size exclusion chromatography to isolate sEVs from a variety of human and murine cancer cell lines, including HeLa, MDA-MB-231, EO771 and B16F10. We directly compared the performance of traditional ultracentrifugation and tangential flow filtration methods, that had undergone further purification by size exclusion chromatography, in their capacity to separate sEVs, and rigorously characterised sEV properties using multiple quantification devices, protein analyses and both image and nano-flow cytometry. Ultracentrifugation and tangential flow filtration both enrich consistent sEV populations, with similar size distributions of particles ranging up to 200 nm. However, tangential flow filtration exceeds ultracentrifugation in isolating significantly higher yields of sEVs, making it more suitable for large-scale research applications. Our results demonstrate that tangential flow filtration is a reliable and robust sEV isolation approach that surpasses ultracentrifugation in yield, reproducibility, time, costs and scalability. These advantages allow for implementation in comprehensive research applications and downstream investigations.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry a wide range of molecules, such as proteins, RNAs, and DNA. EVs are secreted from a wide range of cells, including placental cells. Interestingly, EVs secreted from placental cells have been identified in maternal circulation as early as 6 weeks of gestation, and their concentration increases with the gestational age. While there is growing interest in elucidating the role of exosomes during normal and complicated pregnancies, progress in the field has been delayed because of the inability to quantify placental EVs from the maternal circulation. Recent reports have demonstrated the presence of placental-type alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) EVs only in the blood of pregnant women, indicating that PLAP is a marker to identify EVs secreted from the placenta. Therefore, here we describe a workflow to quantify placental EVs from maternal circulation using a targeted proteomics approach based on selecting specific peptides identified in the PLAP protein.

Research in extracellular vesicles (EVs) has contributed to a better understanding of physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Biologically active cargo, such as miRNAs and proteins, is critical in many different biological processes. In this context, pregnancy is one of the most complex physiological states, which needs a highly regulated system to ensure the correct nourishment and development of the baby. However, pre-existent maternal conditions and habits can modify the EV-cargo and dysregulate the system leading to pregnancy complications, with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) being one of the most reported and influential. Calcification and aging of muscle cells, protein modification in vascular control or variations in the levels of specific miRNAs are some of the changes observed or led by EV populations as adaptation to GDM. Interestingly, insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance changes are not fully understood to date. Nevertheless, the increasing evidence generated has opened new possibilities in the biomarker discovery field but also in the understanding of cellular mechanisms modified and involved in GDM. This brief review aims to discuss some of the findings in GDM and models used for that purpose and their potential roles in the metabolic alterations during pregnancy, with a focus on insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.

Manufacturing molecule-based functional elements directly at device interfaces is a frontier in bottom-up materials engineering. A longstanding challenge in the field is the covalent stabilization of pre-assembled molecular architectures to afford nanodevice components. Here, we employ the controlled supramolecular self-assembly of anthracene derivatives on a hexagonal boron nitride sheet, to generate nanographene wires through photo-crosslinking and thermal annealing. Specifically, we demonstrate µm-long nanowires with an average width of 200 nm, electrical conductivities of 106 S m-1 and breakdown current densities of 1011 A m-2. Joint experiments and simulations reveal that hierarchical self-assembly promotes their formation and functional properties. Our approach demonstrates the feasibility of combined bottom-up supramolecular templating and top-down manufacturing protocols for graphene nanomaterials and interconnects, towards integrated carbon nanodevices.

Complex van der Waals heterostructures from layered molecular stacks are promising optoelectronic materials offering the means to efficient, modular charge separation and collection layers. The effect of stacking in the electrodynamics of such hybrid organic-inorganic two-dimensional materials remains largely unexplored, whereby molecular scale engineering could lead to advanced optical phenomena. For instance, tunable Fano engineering could make possible on-demand transparent conducting layers or photoactive elements, and passive cooling. We employ an adapted Gersten-Nitzan model and real time time-dependent density functional tight-binding to study the optoelectronics of self-assembled monolayers on graphene nanoribbons. We find Fano resonances that cause electromagnetic induced opacity and transparency and reveal an additional incoherent process leading to interlayer exciton formation with a characteristic charge transfer rate. These results showcase hybrid van der Waals heterostructures as paradigmatic 2D optoelectronic stacks, featuring tunable Fano optics and unconventional charge transfer channels.

With five-year survival rates as low as 3%, lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The severity of the disease at presentation is accredited to the lack of early detection capacities, resulting in the reliance on low-throughput diagnostic measures, such as tissue biopsy and imaging. Interest in the development and use of liquid biopsies has risen, due to non-invasive sample collection, and the depth of information it can provide on a disease. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) as viable liquid biopsies are of particular interest due to their potential as cancer biomarkers. To validate the use of sEVs as cancer biomarkers, we characterised cancer sEVs using miRNA sequencing analysis. We found that miRNA-3182 was highly enriched in sEVs derived from the blood of patients with invasive breast carcinoma and NSCLC. The enrichment of sEV miR-3182 was confirmed in oncogenic, transformed lung cells in comparison to isogenic, untransformed lung cells. Most importantly, miR-3182 can successfully distinguish early-stage NSCLC patients from those with benign lung conditions. Therefore, miR-3182 provides potential to be used for the detection of NSCLC in blood samples, which could result in earlier therapy and thus improved outcomes and survival for patients.

Resumen Introducción: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha afectado a millones de personas en todo el mundo. La identificación de sujetos infectados ha sido importante para el control. Objetivo: Evaluar el rendimiento de una reacción de polimerasa en cadena (RPC) cuantitativa en tiempo real (en inglés: RT-qPCR) para SARS-CoV-2, utilizando saliva como matriz en comparación con un hisopado nasofaríngeo (HNF). Metodología: Se reclutaron adultos en atención ambulatoria, la mayoría sintomáticos. Fueron estudiadas 530 muestras pareadas de saliva e HNF con RT-qPCR. Resultados: Fueron positivas 59 muestras de HNF y 54 de saliva. La sensibilidad con saliva fue 91%, especificidad 100%, el valor predictor positivo (VPP) 100%, valor predictor negativo (VPN) 98%. El índice Kappa fue de 0,95 y LR-0,08. En promedio, el umbral de ciclo (en inglés cycle threshold-CT) de la saliva fue 3,99 puntos más alto que los de HNF (p < 0,0001) mostrando que la carga viral (CV) es menor en saliva. La carga viral en ambas disminuyó con el tiempo después del inicio de los síntomas. El muestreo de saliva fue preferido por los sujetos en lugar de HNF. Conclusión: Este estudio demuestra que la RPC para SARS-CoV-2 utilizando saliva, es adecuada para el diagnóstico de COVID-19 en adultos ambulatorios, especialmente en la etapa temprana de los síntomas.


Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people around the world. Part of control strategies is testing a large proportion of the population to identify and isolate the infected subjects. Aim: To evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 detection by the performance of a reverse transcription and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) against SARS-CoV-2, using saliva as a matrix compared to a nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) to simplify obtaining a diagnostic sample. Methods: Adults in outpatient care were recruited, 95% of them symptomatic. We studied 530 paired saliva and NPS samples by SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR. Results: Fifty-nine individuals tested positive in NPS and 54 in saliva samples. Sensitivity for saliva sample was 91%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value (PPV) 100%, negative predictive value (NPV) 98%. The Kappa index was 0.95 and LR-0.08. On average, the cycle threshold (CT) of saliva was 3.99 points higher than those of NPS (p < 0.0001) showing that viral load (VL) is lower in saliva than in NPS. Viral load in both decreased over the time after onset of symptoms. Saliva sampling was preferred by subjects instead of NPS. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR using saliva, even with lower VL, is suitable for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in outpatient adults, especially at early stage of symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious public health issue affecting 9-15% of all pregnancies worldwide. Recently, it has been suggested that extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a role throughout gestation, including mediating a placental response to hyperglycaemia. Here, we investigated the EV-associated miRNA profile across gestation in GDM, assessed their utility in developing accurate, multivariate classification models, and determined the signaling pathways in skeletal muscle proteome associated with the changes in the EV miRNA profile. METHODS: Discovery: A retrospective, case-control study design was used to identify EV-associated miRNAs that vary across pregnancy and clinical status (i.e. GDM or Normal Glucose Tolerance, NGT). EVs were isolated from maternal plasma obtained at early, mid and late gestation (n = 29) and small RNA sequencing was performed. Validation: A longitudinal study design was used to quantify expression of selected miRNAs. EV miRNAs were quantified by real-time PCR (cases = 8, control = 14, samples at three times during pregnancy) and their individual and combined classification efficiencies were evaluated. Quantitative, data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry was use to establish the protein profile in skeletal muscle biopsies from normal and GDM. RESULTS: A total of 2822 miRNAs were analyzed using a small RNA library, and a total of 563 miRNAs that significantly changed (p < 0.05) across gestation and 101 miRNAs were significantly changed between NGT and GDM. Analysis of the miRNA changes in NGT and GDM separately identified a total of 256 (NGT-group), and 302 (GDM-group) miRNAs that change across gestation. A multivariate classification model was developed, based on the quantitative expression of EV-associated miRNAs, and the accuracy to correctly assign samples was > 90%. We identified a set of proteins in skeletal muscle biopsies from women with GDM associated with JAK-STAT signaling which could be targeted by the miRNA-92a-3p within circulating EVs. Interestingly, overexpression of miRNA-92a-3p in primary skeletal muscle cells increase insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. CONCLUSIONS: During early pregnancy, differently-expressed, EV-associated miRNAs may be of clinical utility in identifying presymptomatic women who will subsequently develop GDM later in gestation. We suggest that miRNA-92a-3p within EVs might be a protected mechanism to increase skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity in GDM.

Preeclampsia (PE) is associated with long-term morbidity in mothers and lifelong morbidities for their children, ranging from cerebral palsy and cognitive delay in preterm infants, to hypertension, diabetes and obesity in adolescents and young adults. There are several processes that are critical for development of materno-fetal exchange, including establishing adequate perfusion of the placenta by maternal blood, and the formation of the placental villous vascular tree. Recent studies provide persuasive evidence that placenta-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent a significant intercellular communication pathway, and that they may play an important role in placental and endothelial cell (both fetal and maternal) function. These functions are known to be altered in PE. EVs can carry and transport a wide range of bioactive molescules that have potential to be used as biomarkers and therapeutic delivery tools for PE. EV content is often parent cell specific, thus providing an insight or "thumbprint" of the intracellular environment of the originating cell (e.g., human placenta). EV have been identified in plasma under both normal and pathological conditions, including PE. The concentration of EVs and their content in plasma has been reported to increase in association with disease severity and/or progression. Placenta-derived EVs have been identified in maternal plasma during normal pregnancy and PE pregnancies. They contain placenta-specific proteins and miRNAs and, as such, may be differentiated from maternally-derived EVs. The aim of this review, thus, is to describe the potential roles of EVs in preecmpatic pregnancies, focussing on EVs secreted from placental cells. The biogenesis, specificity of placental EVs, and methods used to characterise EVs in the context of PE pregnancies will be also discussed.

RESUMEN

The principles of topology in condensed matter physics have expanded to areas such as photonics, acoustics, electronics, and mechanics. Their extension to dynamic (soft) matter could enable the control and design of topological thermodynamic (micro)states and nonreciprocal dynamics, potentially leading to paradigmatic applications in molecular and thermal waveguiding, logics, and energy management. This Perspective explores distinct topological concepts for dynamic matter and prospective function. Topological tools are exemplified and discussed for the study of nonlocal order parameters or invariants in dynamic molecular matter, toward the engineering of assemblies, reactions, and system chemistry with unconventional global properties-a scope which has the potential to push the frontiers of physical chemistry and transform chemical topology from form to function.

The reconstruction of the Cochabamba (Bolivia) radiological incident (IAEA-International Atomic Energy Agency 2004 The Radiological Accident in Cochabamba STI/PUB/1199 (Vienna: IAEA)) was used to assess and evaluate retrospective dosimetry methodologies. For this purpose an unshielded radioactive source was placed inside a transportation vehicle (bus) resembling a radiological exposure device. External doses were assessed using water and anthropomorphic phantoms that were placed at various positions in the vehicle and equipped with both fortuitous dosimeters (chip cards, mobile phones), individual dosimeters (electronic dosimeters, thermoluminescent and optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters) and in three cases also with blood sample tubes in thermos flasks for cytogenetic methods. This paper gives a detailed description of the experimental setup, the results of the reference dosimetry, including organ dose assessment for the phantom closest to the source, and includes a compilation of the main results obtained by the retrospective dosimetry techniques. Comparison is made to the results of dose reconstruction obtained by IAEA during the response to the Cochabamba incident in 2002.

During the past 7th Security Framework Program the European Commission funded a research project called CATO (CBRN Crisis management, Architectures, Technologies and Operational procedures) to develop a prototype decision support system for crisis management in addition to providing a suite of guidelines for first responders and incident commanders when dealing with chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incidents. In order to derive these guidelines a proof-of-concept experiment was setup during which several passive agent (Stable CsCl) dispersions with improvised explosive devices and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices were carried out. Each dispersion was thoroughly characterised by a number of monitoring devices, including high-volume air samplers and size-segregated air samplers. All environmental and forensic samples were collected by the UK counter terrorism police, following strict labelling and chain-of-custody protocols. The samples were analysed at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center suing the k0 method for instrumental neutron activation technique. A full consequence assessment analysis was carried out assuming that the observed concentration of Cs-133 in samples was Cs-137 instead and use was made of the specific activity of Cs-137. Due to the sensitivity of the information the European Commission classified this research. The resulted reported on in this work have been unclassified and are released to assist emergency planners and first responders to take the necessary precautions. The results indicate that, up to distances of 50 m from ground zero radiation levels will be considerable and therefore live-saving actions must be performed by fire/rescue wearing full protective gear. In addition, low-wind conditions will favor a long airborne residence time and therefore the use of full-face protective gear is a must. In order to protect first responders, a radiation protection specialist is to determine how long people can enter and remain in the contaminated area. The recovery of evidence in the case of a car-bomb will be hard or even impossible due to the high level of radioactive material remaining inside the vehicle.
